Influenza Surveillance Update – Alicia Budd (CDC)

Alicia provided the influenza surveillance update for Week 44, ending November 3, 2018. Influenza activity in the United States remains low, although small increases in activity are being reported.

Clinical labs are reporting 1–2% of specimens are positive for influenza. To date, influenza A is the predominant strain. Of these, ~75% are H1. Approximately 75% of the influenza B strains reported are of the Yamagata lineage. Antigenic and genetic characterization are not yet available because of the low number of specimens being seen.

The percentage of outpatient visits attributed to influenza-like illness (ILI) continues to increase slowly, accounting for 1.8% of visits during week 44. This remains below the national baseline of 2.2% for the week. Region 7 was the only region reporting to be slightly above baseline levels. At the state level, Georgia reported moderate ILI activity and 3 states reported low activity. The majority of states remain at minimal activity levels.

Mortality data reported from the National Center for Health Statistics for the week ending October 27 indicates 5.7% of deaths were due to pneumonia and influenza (P&I). This is below the epidemic threshold of 6.1% for the week.

No pediatric deaths were reported during week 44, so the 2018–2019 seasonal total remains at 2.

For the geographic spread of flu, most states are still reporting sporadic activity. However, 6 states reported local activity and 2 states (Maryland and Texas) reported regional activity.
