Instructions for Presenters

INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE

The National Adult and Influenza Immunization Summit has developed three slide sets that educators, providers, and public health can use to educate the public, providers, or public health professionals on the Standards for Adult Immunization Practices. These standards were published by the National Vaccine Advisory Committee in 2014.

The information that follows describes how these slides can be used to conduct outreach and education on adult immunizations. The presenter may choose to use all or part of these slides and modify as needed to meet the needs of their specific audience. For example, they may also add information about their local area adult vaccination efforts or add stories about adults impacted by vaccine preventable illnesses.

GOALS

Inform the audience about:

  1. Burden of vaccine-preventable disease and illness
  2. Recommended adult vaccines
  3. Current low levels of vaccination among US adults
  4. Barriers to vaccinating adults and ways to overcome those barriers, including through implementing the Standards for Adult Immunization Practice.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Build awareness about the Standards for Adult Immunization Practice
  2. Provide resources for implementing practice standards for adult immunizations
  3. Create a culture of routine adult vaccination in various healthcare settings

At the end of this presentation, the audience should:

  • Have a better understanding of the Standards for Adult Immunization Practice.
  • Understand their role in increasing vaccination rates for adults

TARGET AUDIENCES

Three different slide sets (Healthcare Provider slides, Patient or Consumer slides, and Public Health Professional slides) were developed for specific target audiences (healthcare providers, community groups, and public health). Groups to consider for each of the slide sets may include, but are not limited to those listed below.

Healthcare Provider Groups
In-service presentations for physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals
Healthcare systems and hospital groups
Occupational health groups
Other medical care organizations

Community Groups
Community organizations
Religious organizations
Local community support groups
Workplaces
Other community events

Public Health Groups
Coalition meetings
Public health workforce meetings at state or local level

USE OF THE SLIDE SETS

The slide sets are designed to be a didactic and interactive presentation, but may also be used for individual self-study or adapted for web application.
Approximate Presentation Times (please add time for questions and answers):
Healthcare Provider slides: 35-45 minutes
Patient or Consumer slides: 25-35 minutes
Public Health Professional slides: 25-35 minutes

OVERVIEW OF THE SLIDES

These trainings consist of slides with accompanying text and notes pages.

Healthcare Provider Slides
These slides focus on educating healthcare providers about the Standards for Adult Immunization Practice and implementation of the Standards. The slides highlight key components of the standards that will assist the provider with assessing patient vaccine needs, strongly recommend vaccines, administering the vaccines or referring patients to a vaccinating provider, and documenting immunizations into registries.

Patient or Consumer Slides
These slides focus on educating the general public about adult immunizations, what they can to do protect themselves and loved ones from vaccine preventable diseases, some barriers adults may face when seeking vaccination, and what they can do to find out which vaccines they need. Examples of people impacted by a vaccine preventable disease are included, but presenters can use their own illustrative examples in place of or in addition to the examples provided.

Public Health Professional Slides
These slides will be used to educate public health partners or professionals on the role they play in adult immunizations. Some of these functions include determining community need and barriers to adult immunization, collecting and analyzing immunization data, and conducting outreach to the public to help with increasing adult immunization coverage rates.

SUGGESTIONS FOR THE SPEAKER

Review the slides and all speakers’ notes before your talk. Add or remove slides as needed to meet the needs of your audience. Personalize the presentation based on your audience or your personal experience.

Ice breaker (5 minutes)
Ask members of the audience to respond to one or more questions such as:

  • How many people here know of someone affected by a vaccine preventable disease?
  • Have you heard of any current events around vaccine preventable diseases?

Presentation (25-45 minutes)
Proceed through slides while utilizing the speaker’s notes.

Question and Answer (10-15 minutes)
